Endnote and Word

Endnote toolbar doesn't display in Word

Sometimes the Endnote toolbar may not automatically be displayed in Word. If

it isn’t go to the View menu in Word then choose Toolbars then Endnote.

Add pinpoint references

The easiest way to add the page number to a footnote to make it a pinpoint citation is to enter it manually.  Enter a comma, page number and full-stop following the Endnote generated footnote.

Building your library

Attach full-text documents to your references

You can attach files to a reference in Endnote.  Simply open the reference and drag and drop the file into the Image field.  The file will be permanently attached to the rference (one file per reference record), the file itself is stored in the [library name]. DATA folder found in the same folder as the library file.

Access the "Source It" function in SuperSearch from within an Endnote reference

From the Edit menu choose Preferences then choose OpenUrl/PDF

In the OpenURL Path box enter:

http://sfx.unimelb.edu.au/sfxlcl3/

In the arguments box enter (as a single line of text):

?sid=ISI:WoS&aufirst=AUFIRST&aulast=AULAST&issn=ISSN&atitle=ATITLE&title=

TITLE&volume=VOLUME&issue=ISSUE&date=DATE&spage=SPAGE&epage=EPAGE

Both check box/radio buttons in the dialog box also need to be checked in order to:

Enable OpenURL

And

Copy new PDF files...

Once these changes have been made you will be able to check the online availability of any reference in your library.  To do so:

1. Open a reference

2. From the References Menu choose URL then OpenURL Link.

SuperSearch will be automatically searched and a window detailing online availability will be displayed.

Styles and Reference Types

Is there an Endnote style for AGLC?

Endnote doesn't come with a style for AGLC but you can download one.  The style was orginally created by the University of Queensland Library and modified by the Legal Resource Centre at the University of Melbourne.  Two styles are available.  One creates footnotes and a bibliography.  The other creates footnotes only.  Both may be downloaded here as a single zipped file.  If you choose to use this style then modifications must be made to the reftypetable.  Styles and Reference Types.

The legal reference type

The legal reference type is used for legislation, case law and any other documents that aren't catered for by the other 11 reference types.  Unlike the other reference types, the style file conducts virtually no formatting on data entered.   References must be entered in correct AGLC style and format into the AGLC Citation field.  For example:

AGLC Citation

 R V Hughes (2000) 202 CLR 535

Brackets, italics etc. must be entered manually.

Multiple authors

Where there is more than one author, enter each one on a new line - surname then a comma then the first name.  Eg.

Smith, John

Brown, Jane

The style will add an "and" bewteen the authors when they're output to Word.

Bibliographies

Grouping bibliographies

Rule 1.15 of the AGLC requires that the bibliography should be grouped into the following sections:

1.  Articles/Books/Reports

2.  Case Law

3.  Legislation

4.  Treaties

5.  Other Sources

If you wish to have yor bibliography divided up in this way you must catagorise each reference by entering a catagory into the label field.

To ensure consistency you may create a Term List and attach it to the label field.  Term Lists are used to help with data entry by suggesting terms as you type.
